Five injured in Vadodara mob violence

Vadodara, March 4. (UNI): At least five people including two policemen were injured in mob violence in the riot-hit walled city area of Vadodara late last night.

The violence triggered by a crude bomb blast at Chapaner under the city police station, soon spread to neighbouring sensitive areas of Fatehpura, Yakutpura, Panjri Mohalla and Nani Chipawada.

In order to disperse the warring mobs, police fired one round in the air at Yakutpura and resorted to lathicharge and lobbed 15 tear gas shells at different places as members of both the communities indulged in heavy brick-batting causing damage to several shops.

A police team which rushed to Yakutpura to control the situation, had a narrow escape when two crude bombs were hurled at their jeep.

Two of the bombs exploded near their vehicle, but nobody was injured, police sources said adding that three more crude bombs were recovered during combing operation in the area.

So far eight people had been arrested in connection with the violent incidents, the sources said. The injured included one sub-inspector and a head constable of the city police station.

According to the fire brigade sources, a lorry was also set on fire by some miscreants at Raopura.

A strong contingent of Rapid Action Force, besides units of the border wing and the State Reserve Police have been deployed in the area.
